Funded by the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre, I worked with Dr Anna Skeels and Dr Katy Huxley at SPARK, Cardiff University to undertake participatory research focusing on outcomes for children affected by modern slavery who had accessed support from the Independent Child Trafficking Guardianship Service (England and Wales).
Safe to Grow has collaborated on many exciting projects. Here are some highlights:
Past Projects
Outcomes for children and young people affected by modern slavery
In Their Shoes - UK: Alicia’s Story - An evidence based experiential case study
Funded by UKRI, Anna Skeels, SPARK, Cardiff University and I developed a new training resource for professionals. Taking the findings from our Outcomes Research and the lived experiences of young people and Independent Child Trafficking Guardians, we designed the resource to embed learning from the research in practice.
The resource includes an experiential case study, group work exercise and training content. A Resource Handbook brings everything together to aid ongoing learning and development.
Finding a Safe Home:
learning from the Ukraine response
Working with the British Red Cross I led the research project focusing on accommodation responses to people displaced from Ukraine.
The research included an extensive evidence review, focus groups and in-depth interviews with Ukrainians, as well as professionals and Government officials. Case studies were utilised in addition to photo elicitation methods which helped people who had been displaced to tell their stories.
Amazing People of the World (APOW)
Working alongside Young Roots staff and young people we designed and mobilised a new youth group - Amazing People of the World.
Through creative, sporting and educational activities decided by young people, APOW aims to increase emotional wellbeing, reduce social isolation and improve confidence of refugees aged 14 - 25. years.
An evaluation of the Scottish Guardianship Service
Working with the Scottish Guardianship Service, Ravi K S Kohli and I evaluated the important work of Guardians within asylum determination and National Referral Mechanism processes.
First steps to safety? The role of reception centres in supporting people out of exploitation
A collaboration with The British Red Cross led to research focusing on the role of reception centres in identifying survivors of human trafficking during police operations, and exploring help offered to enable their exit from exploitation.
The research has since been used as a good practice guide to setting up and running reception centres.
Independent Review of the Modern Slavery Act 2015
A highlight of my career so far, working as an advisor to Ravi K S Kohli on behalf of the Rt Hon Frank Field MP, Review Chair.
My role aided evidence gathering, report writing and developing recommendations regarding Section 48 - Independent Child Trafficking Advocates (now Guardians).
Strengthening responses to child trafficking and modern slavery
Working with the International Organisation for Migration (UN Migration Agency), we
collaborated together on a two-year project, training foster carers to provide safe accommodation for children who were unaccompanied and at risk of trafficking from Albania and Vietnam. In addition, I completed the projects’ process and impact evaluation.
